SF Pride Trans March

6.27.17 I followed The Degenderettes through the march from Dolores Park through the Castro to the Tenderloin. They are a crew of misfits, clad in black and painted in skull makeup, puppeteering a giant cardboard skeleton monster. There are smiles and kisses in the street, tits out, dancing, and an anger, a heat of revolution and riot. Onlookers smiled and applauded. Police lined the streets but were non-violent towards us. Everyone marching is pissed, in-love, sick of the state of things, ready to fight. The energy is thick, happy and furious. My favorite banner read: Not Gay As In Happy But Queer as in Fuck You.

What a Weird Long Trip It’s Been

comic_denver_dink

March and April flew by like a train on fire! I managed to juggle my full-time work with weekends jetsetting around to comic conventions with Eddie Wright to promote our new book, hitting up Austin (lovely!), Sacramento (spread out!) and Denver (snowy!) and only lost a little bit of sanity in the process. I haven’t gone to any conventions in awhile, and it was a splash of fresh enthusiasm to be around amazing creators and meet a bunch of new faces and return home with the thrill that something is happening and we’re making things! I really loved Denver, and the comics culture there, the community seemed awesome.

(I was caught in the act of freezing outside the venue and hearing my name called by the taco truck guy)

Returned to the bay to do some signings at my two comic home-away-from-homes, Isotope Comics and Atlantis Fantasyworld. James has been a wonderful, supportive awesome friend over the years, and signing at his shop is always a blast. We signed on Record Store Day and James recorded a haunting doomsy track inspired by the first issue of Lake Imago and we designed a mini disk together. You can listen to the new song online. Such a fun day!

And Atlantis, what can I say? This is the first shop I started buying Batman comics at when I was little, I started working at Atlantis when I was 16, and I learned all about the industry while working signings, reorders and talking to passionate readers. Atlantis is my family. To great to see Joe, Trisha and Nate and roam my favorite comic book racks. As you can see, I’m pretty thrilled (Eddie, on the other hand…) :

Somewhere in the middle of all that I got to see my absolute love of a fantastic daydream comedian, Noel Fielding! Of course I had to draw a comic about that.

Eddie and I just did a podcast with Canned Air, and you can listen to it here!

Now I’ve got some breathing room until SPX later this year, so I’m going to be hard at work drawing Lake Imago #2.

Dream big,

See you at Denver DINK!

Eddie Wright and I will be in Colorado at the Denver DINK! convention this Friday and Saturday! We’ll have copies of Lake Imago and What I Ate When. What is “What I Ate When”, you ask? It’s a sketch diary of all my meals that I’ve eaten this year so far, catch up (to mid-February) at whatiatewhen.tumblr.com.

The Immaterial Girl Returns

I’ve had my head down for the past few months working on art direction, UI and design on a new mobile game that I should be able to share with you in a couple months. Games, man, they take a lot of work!

Recently I had the absolute pleasure to work on a short comic with the wonderful Kieron Gillen  for his return of the comic series Phonogram! I remember reading the first issues of Phonogram when I was a kid working at the comic book store, and I’m thrilled to be in the upcoming issue (Immaterial Girl #2)! This new series is fantastic, weird and trippy. My good friend James Sime is hosting a release party for the issue at Isotope, where I will sign and draw and we’ll drink cocktails in celebration! Here’s the info:

A video game that lets you grow succulent plants : my favorite sorts of games are pointless. I’m in love.
Kieron interviewed by Paste : Learn everything about Kieron.
Travel Man in Istanbul : I love Richard Ayoade, and especially love when he shows me some things to do on my upcoming trip to Turkey!

Event Spotlight: Field Day Opening Night

fieldday_layout1

We got some great photos back from Jenn Farmer from First Friday at Field Day. She’s a fantastic photographer, and got some great shots of all the characters who came out for the opening, and she took some of my favorite new shots of me. Check out the whole nights over at the Field Day Facebook.

I took photos of all my pieces right before framing them, and those are included here as well.

My amazing buddy Lauren came out for the show, and she’s 6 months pregnant! Glamorous mama. We’ve worked on various art teams together in the past, and have some exciting new ones coming up in the future. I also cannot wait to meet her baby girl.

The Latest Online:

Huffington Post : I was included in this round-up of queer comic artists! While I haven’t been drawing comics about girls kissing girls for quite a few years, it was really fun to dig up some of my favorite pages and be included in this list!

Mimi Pond Interview : I was thrilled to see Jen Leonard interviewing Mimi Pond, who’s a fantastic cartoonist. I read “Over Easy” recently and absolutely loved it, from the diner drama intrigue to the glimpses of Oakland in the 70’s.

We Are Branch Project Spotlight : Speaking of… here’s the project spotlight on the Brand New Ways website! Shauna designed a fantastic styleguide and website for BNW, and this was our first website collaboration that I did development on. More on that shortly…

I’m with the band : To wrap it up, here’s a photoshoot I fell in love with over at I-D. I love the models, the Keith Richards-esque clothing, the falling on the ground, all of it. Great capture.
